Animation
Strings Attached
Strings Attached is a mixed media animation that explores the theme of matchmaking in Chinese culture. The narrative revolves around the main character, a 32 year-old, single, career woman and her experience being matched. The story depicts negative perceptions of matchmaking in modernity and the conflict of individuality versus traditions and family values. Rather than using dialogue, Strings Attached utilizes sound effects and body gestures for universal appeal. The use of mixed media techniques such as cel animation, stop-motion and AfterEffects and Flash puppeting expresses the main character’s point of view.
Animation
Betwen Dynasties
Between Dynasties rapidly advances through the history of China using traditional Zodiac characters to symbolize the transitions between Dynastic eras while epitomizing the intrinsic sustainability of its culture over many thousands of years. The lateral motion suggests an infinite scroll of history revealing the rich interconnections between environmental resources, a sophisticated language system and broad social upheaval and reconciliation. Between Dynasties posits Mainland China at a crucial moment in world history where its embrace of rapid industrial growth and social mobility could manifest a nation of innovation rather than mere manufacture and consumption.

Becoming
Becoming examines character design from a scientific point of view by imagining the hypothetical creation of parahumans or animalhuman hybrids. These chimeric experimentations in which human cells are injected into animal embryos establish a new race of beings. Computer generated images present these characters hyper-realistically as photographs depicting the story of Ruru, a kangaroo-human girl in the infant, toddler, and adolescent stages. By visualizing this scientific experimentation, Becoming questions the ethical and legal issues of genetic engineering research.

Mr. O'Brien
Mr. O’Brien is an interactive mirror installation which creates a system that accuses people in the gallery of alleged thought crimes and responds instantly to physical movement within the space.
